UDHAMPUR, Jan 14: A mother and her son apparently died of suffocation after they fell asleep as a bonfire kept burning in their room in Jakhani late last night. The deceased have been identified as Kanta Devi, 60, wife of Om Prakash and her son Jagdev Singh, 40, residents of Jakhani area of district Udhampur. As per the official sources, the duo lit a bonfire to celebrate the Lohri festival and after having meals both of them went to sleep leaving behind the coal heater burning inside the room. After a while, a blanket caught fire and smoke spread in the closed room and both died due to suffocation. Police rushed to the spot soon after it received information of the incident and shifted both dead bodies to mortuary of District Hospital Udhampur. Later, dead bodies of the deceased were handed over to the family members for last rites.
