Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Jan 30 : One-way traffic was resumed on Thursday on the national highway, the only all weather road connecting Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, after stranded vehicles from Jammu were cleared.
Traffic will ply from Srinagar to Jammu and no vehicle will be allowed from opposite direction, a traffic police official said.
Traffic on the highway was suspended on Tuesday following fresh snowfall at Qazigund, the gateway of Kashmir and both sides of Jawhar Tunnel (JT) and Shaitan Nallah. There was also fresh snowfall early yesterday and landslides and shooting stone between Ramban and Ramsu.
”All vehicles, which had left different parts of Jammu region on Tuesday, were stopped at Nagrota and Udhampur,” he said.
However, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) put into service sophisticated machine and men and cleared the snow and landslides. Later, stranded vehicles were allowed to move towards their respective destinations. ”About 200 trucks, loaded with essentials, besides oil and LPG tankers have reached Srinagar,” he said.
The weather is clear and traffic was allowed from Srinagar to Jammu today. However, the Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) have to cross Qazigund, gateway of Kashmir before 1200 hrs.
Several hundred Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMVs) including those carrying fruit and empty oil and LPG tankers, stranded on this side of the tunnel were allowed to move towards Jammu early this morning. Other HMVs will be allowed to move towards Jammu in the afternoon, he said.
The 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh highway, the only road connecting Union Territory (UT) Ladakh with Kashmir, and 98-km-long Mughal road, linking Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region, and Anantnag-Kishtwar remained closed for the past 51 days. These roads are likely to reopen in April-May.
