New set of Kashmir centric leaders desperate to make their presence felt | 3 former CMs become history, Jammu leaders need to wake up | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Feb 15: As the three former chief ministers of Jammu and Kashmir, Farooq Abdullah his son Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti continue to remain under detention, new set of Kashmir centric politicians are making desperate attempts to project themselves as the viable alternative to replace the old horses. Former Finance Minister and the rebel leader of Peoples Democratic Party, Altaf Bukhari, is leading the charge. He is all set to launch his new political party. The disgruntled former PDP legislators, who were seen accompanying Bukhari in the past, have already announced that they would be joining his new party. Besides some old hands like Ghulam Hassan Mir and Hakeem Yasin, both former ministers and legislators too are likely to side with Bukhari. An analyst while talking to Early Times said, “The developments which have taken place in Kashmir in the recent past are an indication that Farooq, Omar and Mehbooba don’t stand anywhere and their political careers seem to have ended.” Omar’s sister has challenged the detention of Omar Abdullah under Public Safety Act in Supreme Court but Farooq and Mehbooba have not made any such attempt. “Mehbooba knows it very well that she is a leader without party and even if she is released it will hardly make any difference. Farooq seems to have left the ground open for his son, Omar, who too seems to be on a weak wicket,” the analyst added. An observer said, “Kashmir centric leaders, who used to claim that they were born to rule stand isolated. No one coming out in their support has proved it beyond doubt that they didn’t represent anyone.” He said the new Kashmir centric leaders trying to revive the political activities in Kashmir is a message for Jammu based leaders that they also need to do something to make their presence felt. “They need to realize that for the past 70-years Kashmir centric leaders have not allowed anyone from Dogra community to become the Chief Minister of J&K and have always pursued Kashmir centric agenda. Now the times have changed and this trend has to be reversed,” the observer added. Another analyst said that Jammu based leaders will have to put their act together to dispel the notion about them being the second fiddles. “When BJP had joined hands with the Peoples Democratic Party in 2015 to form the government in the erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir many people were of the opinion that hegemony of the Kashmir centric leaders will end. But it didn’t happen as the BJP leaders went out of way to appease their friends in Kashmir. This attitude has to change,” he added.
