Corrupt look for rat holes to hide as ACB tightens noose | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 11: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) becoming active and acting tough against the corrupt elements across the Union Territory of J&K has made many people uncomfortable. The ACB recently unearthed a multi crore scam in J&K Cooperative Bank in Srinagar and booked its top functionaries. An analyst while talking to Early Times said, “The politicians, who ruled J&K in the past were aware about these scams but they didn’t allow anti-graft agencies to act against the big guns. They just allowed the corruption to flourish under their very nose.” He said, “After the transition of the erstwhile J&K State into a Union Territory many things have changed. People who have amassed wealth by resorting to unfair means are looking for rat holes to hide. But they are not finding any escape route.” It may be recalled that just a few days ago the ACB had booked Hilal Rather son of the former finance minister of Jammu and Kashmir in an alleged multi crore loan fraud case. However, Rather’s legal counsel has denied the charges leveled against his client by the ACB. Similarly, the ACB also booked the former Deputy Mayor of Srinagar, Sheikh Imran for defrauding the J&K Bank of crores. An observer said, “The recent actions of the anti-graft agencies have proved that the former rulers had no will to wipe out the corruption from the system. They just wanted to sleep over the burning issues.” He said, “When J&K had the political dispensation in place, the anti-graft agencies on many occasions came up with a list of big guns involved in the corrupt practices but these agencies were stopped from acting against the alleged scamsters for one or other reason.” He said, “The speed at which the ACB is acting indicates that in coming days many skeletons are likely to tumble out and the big names which have been making rounds could end up in deep trouble.” Another analyst said, “Erstwhile regimes in Jammu and Kashmir failed to set their priorities. The former rulers were more concerned about playing politics over the issues, which didn’t fall in their domain. They made no attempt to the address the burning issues like corruption, which led to the corrupt elements turning into monsters and ruining the entire system.” He said, “Now times have changed and the people who have amassed huge wealth disproportionate to their known sources of income are making every attempt to maintain a low profile but it’s not helping their cause.” |
