After lady’s death medicos go on strike at MCH Anantnag, refuse to treat patients | | | Saahil Suhail
Early Times Report Anantnag, Apr 27: Demanding safety gears and separate health facility for Red Zone residents, the doctors and paramedical staff of Maternity and Child Care Hospital in South Kashmir’s Anantnag on Monday went on strike and refused to treat patients including emergency cases. The development not only exposed the poor health care system in the district but also brought to fore the fact that there was lack of synergy between Administration and Health department. The doctors and paramedical staff of Maternity and Child Care Hospital on Monday told Early Times that they were facing shortage of essential safety kits and that they were being compelled to treat those patients coming from Red Zones of the district in the same theater and labor ward which they are using for general patients. “One incident has happened already. Our 50% staff is already in home quarantine and we don’t want to put the life of everyone on risk by allowing residents of Red and Buffer Zone areas inside the hospital. The administration must decide it and establish separate health facility so such patients,” doctors told ADC Anantnag, Ghulam Hassan Sheikh. Additional Deputy Commissioner Anantnag had come to MCH Anantnag for pacifying the doctors and paramedical staff who were on strike. Although, ADC assured them that the administration was discussing the issue and was about to take some step but the doctors didn’t resume work instead asked for complete fumigation of the hospital. A spot visit found hospitals wards empty and patients not being allowed to enter into the premises of the hospital for treatment. “At Shangus we were advised to visit MCH Aantnag but here we aren’t being allowed to enter into the hospital premises as we had came from Red Zone area,” Mehraj Ahmad, an attendant of patient who was laying a private car, told Early Times. The family had come from Wakeelbalan Shangus and said that the area was marked as Buffer Zone not the Red Zone as claimed by the doctors. “Let us assume we are from Red Zone does that the mean will not be provided the treatment. I can tell with authority that it against the all the laws and administration must take note of it,” he added. Earlier, on the similar pattern a pregnant lady was also allegedly ‘ill treated’ at MCH Anantnag as she too had come from Red Zone area. The woman along with her twin babies died and the case is now under investigation. Her funeral was attended by many people and the SOPs were violated. On Sunday Assistant Commissioner Revenue (ACR), Anantnag Syed Yasir had tweeted: “The unfortunate death of a pregnant woman yesterday at MCH Anantnag can’t be attributed to COVID, though samples taken post her death have reported positive. The alleged negligence on part of maternity hospital is being enquired into.” However, the administration and Health Department including officials of Medical College Anantnag are under public scanner for mishandling the situation and covid19 patients. People have started asking how the family of deceased lady managed to reach Anantnag if their area was marked as Red Zone? Why the administrator of the Red Zone wasn’t aware about her movement? Why the health authorities didn’t tell the family to bury the deceased as per the COVID-19 protocol and what facilities the administration has kept available for those patients who come from infected areas. Anantnag residents said, “At least the administration should have constituted a joint control room.” |
