Govt turns blind-eye towards workers of unorganized sector | BOCWWB funds not utilized, daily wagers suffer | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 28: The Government has turned a blind eye towards the workers of unorganized sector. These workers are facing immense hardship amid COVID-19 lockdown and are at the verge of starvation. Sources in the Labour Department told Early Times that although it has been more than one month since the lockdown has been imposed but the government has not devised any mechanism to provide financial assistance to the workers of the unorganized sector despite the fact that it has over Rs 600 crore of funds collected under Building and Others Construction Workers Welfare Board (BOCWWB). “The fund pooled under BOCWWB, is mainly used for the welfare of workers registered under the board. These workers have been facing immense hardships these days. Providing immediate financial assistance to them from this fund will give them instant relief in real sense,” they said, adding that even small part of this fund can serve the purpose for them in these testing time. What to talk about registered workers, even the workers of unorganized sectors like drivers, conductors, hawkers have been hit hard, they added. They said that at a time when various state governments have been liberally using Building and Others Construction Workers Welfare Board fund for providing immediate financial assistance but in Jammu and Kashmir UT, the government has not been taking it seriously. “Delhi Government has set an example by extending Rs 5000 to all such workers and specially auto, and other driver conductors etc and even Central Government has also directed the Labour Ministry to prepare the list of migrant workers all over the country with their bank accounts on war footing level for providing them financial assistances,” they said. They further alleged that there is total lack of coordination between the departments due to which poor workers are suffering. |
