Today’s play ‘Twelfth Night’ is William Shakespeare’s most famous comedy with a twist. The comedy hinges on mistaken identity and role reversal. Its title is influenced by many of the traditional themes of Christmas and its celebration. Romance and the Comic fade into each other by almost insensible gradations, and the greatest beauty of a poetical work often consists in the harmonious blending of these two elements. Twelfth Night, written by William Shakespeare presents as a perfect unification of these emotions. This comedy, devises a romantic plot, misplaced passions and mistaken identity. The story revolves around the central character of Viola, shipwrecked and in search of her missing twin Sabastian. For protection, she disguises herself as a young man (Cesario) and seeks employment in the household of Duke Orsino. The Duke offers employment to Viola in return of the favour of wooing Princess Olivia, rejecting previously made advances by the Duke as she mourns the death of her brother. In an unforeseen turn of events Viola falls for Duke Orsino and Oliva falls for Viola disguised as the male Cesario. The story unfolds to more confusion when Olivia sends Malvolio her pompous steward after Viola to give her a ring, pretending Viola left it behind. On receiving the ring, Viola realises that Olivia loves her but decides the situation is too complex for her to untie. This play is believed to have been performed for the first time in 1961 in front of Elizabeth I even before it was published in 1623, seven years after Shakespeare’s death. On Thursday, the 22nd day of this online theatre festival, Balwant Thakur’s popular dogri play ‘Suno Eh Kahani would be featured.
