People of Mang demand construction of bridge over river Ujh | | | ARUN JASROTIA Early Times Report
UDHAMPUR, May 4: The residents of Mang in Basantgarh area of District Udhampur have demanded construction of bridge over river Ujh to provide safe connectivity to the people of several villages in the area who are forced to cross the river at the risk of their lives. Students, villagers and farmers have been facing problems crossing the river and transporting their produce as well as cattle. Although villagers have been demanding construction of bridge over the river in Mang since long, and the people's plight was listened by the officers in both Back to Village programmes held previous year but nothing has been done so far to address the issue. The months from June to September are the worst as the Ujh river swells to dangerous proportions during this period. Parents of school students of the villages alleged that their wards are forced to skip classes during rainy season. The task is more challenging for children to reach schools. The villagers have been demanding a bridge over the river but the district administration remains oblivious to their plight. Residents of the area have repeatedly approached authorities during successive governments. “But our requests fell on deaf ears. We are scared for the safety of our children who have to cross over a temporary wooden bridge to reach school,” said locals. “Last month a woman, along with her two year daughter went to buy wheat flour from a traditional flour mill (Atta Chakki or Gharat). While crossing the Ujjh River over the plank of wood in the absence of permanent bridge, the woman along with her daughter slipped into the river,” said Bishan Dass. “Locals rushed to the spot and started rescue operation and rescued two year old girl after hectic efforts but her mother swept away and feared to be dead though her body is yet to be recovered,” he added.
