COVID-19 outbreak puts political activities in J&K on halt | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, May 12: The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown in Jammu and Kashmir like other parts of the country has put the political activities in cold storage across the Union Territory. Most political parties in Jammu and Kashmir were demanding early polls but the pandemic has put a lid over all such proposals at least for this year. “How could you even think of polls. There is no such possibility. Allowing campaigning, meetings and congregations in coming days looks impossible,” said an official. He said, “Possibilities about assembly polls being held this year look impossible. Jammu and Kashmir administration may write to the Union Government not to allow any political activities till the end of this year.” It’s in place to mention here that the Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad while talking to the media persons along with Dr Farooq Abdullah in March this year had pitched for early elections in Jammu and Kashmir. He had also demanded the restoration J&K’s statehood and preferred not to raise any issue pertaining to the abrogation of Article 370 and whether the order issued on August 5, last year should be rolled back. This was meanwhile for the first time that Congress party had sent feelers about being comfortable with the scraping of JK’s special status for now. |
