Panchayat Kail of Majalta faces water shortage as hand pumps lie defunct
5/26/2020 11:18:08 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT

UDHAMPUR, May 26: Several hand pumps have become defunct in various panchayats of tehsil Majalata in district Udhampur over the years but the concerned department is not getting them repaired due to which the villages largely dependent on these sources of water are suffering a lot.
One such case has come from Panchayat Kail where the hand pumps of SC Mohalla and Kail Pardai Main Market have not been working for the last 15 days. In this rising heat people have to move around for drinking water as the availability of water from other sources is scarce. Nayab Sarpanch of Panchayat Kail, Nirmal Kesar said that he talked to the concerned JE about the damaged hand pumps, but the officer said that the defunct hand pumps cannot be repaired without the recommendation of District Development Commissioner (DDC) Udhampur while the water tankers cannot be made available as an alternate to supply as all the water tankers are engaged with quarantine centers. He said that people have had to walk miles for water and bring it from natural water sources but ironically most of the area’s natural water sources have dried up due to scorching heat.
Nirmal Kesar appealed to the DDC, Udhampur, Dr Piyush Singla to direct the department for repairing the damaged hand pumps at Majalta in a time bound manner so that the people do not suffer further more. Kesar also requested for providing water tankers in Majalta and running the water supply smoothly so that the people can heave a sigh of relief.
