NC’s stand on 370 abrogation remains uncertain | Omar’s fire-fighting raises more eye brows, more questions on party’s approach | | Early Times Report
Jammu, May 26: The confusion within the ranks of national conference was evident on Tuesday when its voice president tried to pacify the growing resentment between two of his party colleagues. However, the stand taken by the party vis-a-vis 370 abrogation continues to remain ambivalent. Recently there was a rift witnessed between the two NC leaders with one questioning party’s stoic silence post August and hinting at a possible rebellion within the ranks of the camp. Arrogating the fire fighting role to himself, Omar jumped into the scene to pacify the air. However, the statement issued by the NC vice President looks notoriously ambivalent with no clarity over what the party’s stand is on 370 scarping. “Omar has neither voiced his opinion in favour of the 370 Abrogation nor has he upped ante against the August 5 move. He has cited his party’s stand on Supreme Court before August 5. No one know what that really means,” says a senior national conference functionary from central Kashmir. “@RuhullahMehdi & @tanvirsadiq are both valued colleagues & friends. As far as I’m concerned that are both entitled to an opinion & to disagree with each other. Neither’s views, expressed in a private capacity, change the stand NC has taken in the SC & outside regarding 5th Aug,” Omar wrote on micro blogging site twitter. Another senior NC functionary said that even when Omar has tried to pacify the situation on Tuesday, he hasn’t in real terms spoken about his party’s stand on 370 and its abrogation on August 5, last year. “This means chaos and confusion. The party leadership is silent and we don’t know on which side of the aisle are we sitting,” said the NC leader. In March this year, National Conference President and Member of Parliament Dr Farooq Abdullah asked people to follow health advisories following the unprecedented situation in face of coronavirus threat. Scores of delegations from across Kashmir called on Abdullah at his residence to greet him on his release. The delegations comprising of workers, party functionaries, delegates and civil society groups had come from Shopian, Langate, Zadibal, Hazratbal, Pulwama, Charar- e- Sharief, Chadooora, Kokarnag, Baramulla, Anantnag, Shangus, Qazigund constituencies. As the participants and the media persons attending the event were expecting Abdullah to break his silence on 370 issue, the veteran politician surprised everyone and talked Coronavirus and not the special status. Days later, Omar echoed the words of his father Dr Farooq Abdulalh and demanded Government of India must release all prisoners detained on August 5 last year irrespective of their party affiliations and that 4-G internet services should be restored so that people learn how to fight the deadly Covid-19. Talking to reporters at his Gupkar residence, soon after he was released from almost eight month long detention by the J&K government, Omar said that as far as Artic le 370 and 35 A, he will speak on the issues openly in detail later. “At present, I will speak about how we can get rid of Covid-19. We are fighting a big fight against Coronavirus. Today, when we were asked to maintain social distancing, here we are together violating the very orders,” he said. |
