In a first, COVID-19 positive pregnant woman operated for C-Section in Anantnag | | | SAAHIL SUHAIL
EARLY TIMES REPORT
ANANTNAG, June 27: A COVID-19 positive pregnant woman was operated for cesarean section on Saturday weeks after the authorities in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district established a separate facility for coronavirus infected pregnant women. Dr Fozia Jan, senior gynecologist and consultant at MCCH Anantnag who led the team which carried out the delivery said the baby girl was born on Saturday afternoon through C-section and is doing fine so far. “She gave birth to a female baby and both are doing well as of now,” she said. The 33 year old pregnant woman from Dooru Anantnag was operated on Saturday at around 2:30pm, Medical Superintend Maternity and Child Care Hospital Anantnag-Mir Ji Andrabi told Early Times. Andrabi also looks after the John Bishop’s Mission Hospital which the authorities recently designated as COVID19 hospitals for coronavirus infected pregnant women said that the pregnant woman was declared covid19 positive on Friday. It is for the first time that a COVID19 positive pregnant woman was operated in the district. Earlier the authorities used to shift such patients to Srinagar for treatment which would always create confusion and on multiple occasions the families alleged that they were mistreated. “By setting up separate facilities for coronavirus infected pregnant women it has definitely eased out the sufferings of those females and their families,” locals said. The health officials in Anantnag said that a total of 79 pregnant women have tested positive for coronavirus recently and the hospital has enough facilities to deal with the situation. Earlier multiple cases of medical negligence had surfaced in the district and even two pregnant women had died at MCCH Anantnag and Sub-District Hospital Seerhamdan. All three cases are currently being probed by the civil and health department officials. Following the death of pregnant women and mishandling of pregnancy cases in South Kashmir especially in Anantnag, the Jammu and Kashmir Government on last month decided to setup separate facilities for such patients as the repeated visits of pregnant women to hospitals for ante-natal checkups and deliveries have made them susceptible to contract the virus. Such separate facilities were set up in ten districts of Kashmir and here in Anantnag the district administration decided to take over JBM Hospital for one month. According to WHO, women with COVID-19 can breastfeed if they wish to but should practice hygiene during the feeding, where a mask where available, wash hands before and after touching the baby and routinely clean and disinfect surfaces they have touched. |
