Junaid’s ouster from SMC mayorship hints end of PC-BJP bonhomie | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, June 27: With the Bharatiya Janta Party having played a key role in the ouster of Junaid Mattoo as the Mayor of Srinagar Municipal Corporation, what has emerged as even major development is that BJP seems to have finally severed the ties with the Peoples Conference. While Junaid was seen as the close aide of the PC founder and President Sajjad Gani Lone, his ouster through the no-confidence motion conveys that the nationalist party headquartered in New Delhi is not interested to have any further relationship with the separatist-turned-politician in Kashmir. Sources said Sajjad Lone and his friends in politics in the national capital had been trying their level best to convince the BJP leaders that Junaid should not be ousted. Sources said some of the close relatives of Sajjad and Junaid himself tried their best to maintain a relation with the nationalist party but that the BJP remained firm on its stand of not supporting the PC anymore. Sources said even till last moment the deliberations were on with some top BJP leaders in New Delhi that let Junaid continue as the Mayor to send a message that PC was still in the good books of the government at the center. However, the no-confidence motion as passed on June 16 shattered all such dreams of any further bonhomie. It is pertinent to mention that after the collapse of the BJP-PDP alliance in 2018, Sajjad Lone had emerged as the powerful leader in Jammu and Kashmir owing to his proximity with the Modi government. “He(Sajjad) had been so influential that many leaders from other parties had also joined his party. He was also being seen as the Chief Ministerial face of any new formation of government in Jammu and Kashmir. Top BJP leaders like Ram Madhav would frequently hold deliberations with Lone and other PC leaders,” recapped a senior politician. Observers said the said relations started getting strained after the PC failed to open its account in the Parliament elections of 2019. “Thereafter, he( Sajjad) started behaving again like a separatist and even joined hands with the regional parties who were opposing the abrogation of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir till August 5, when Lone was also taken into custody,” said a politician. “While his release from MLA Hostel had suggested that Sajjad may have revived relations with the BJP, Junaid’s ouster tells a new story,” said a senior politician. Despite repeated attempts the PC leaders were not available for comments. |
