The Need for Reforms
7/17/2020 11:33:25 PM

Omkar Dattatray

There has been much talk and discussion on the subject of reforms in our educational policy. The government has set up committees to suggest the needed reforms in the education policy but still there is much need for the reform of the educational sector so that we can produce the skilled youth who can fit in the needs of the country. But we are yet to see a coherent national policy on education. This is basically a vast and complex subject and all the relevant issues need to be looked in a compressive manner. It is generally accepted that the education and health are the two priority areas for developing countries and India is no exception. There is great need for human resource development for the progress of the country in the present times. It is all the more necessary that we optimise the benefits of higher education for our people and the country. We need to have a paradigm shift in our approach to education .From being the acquisition of the information and knowledge the education should encourage originality and creativity. Thus our education system should become a tool for the personality development of the students and also to mould them into good human being .Swami Vivekananda has said that the objective of education should be character building and expansion of intellect so as to achieve manifestation of the perfection already in men. India has a rich cultural heritage and we must sensitise our youth with our rich culture so that they will feel pride in their culture. Our youth are showing signs of increasing aggressiveness and indiscipline. Thus to deal with this disturbing trend we should inculcate in them the Indian values of compassion, tolerance and universal brotherhood .Our present educational policy is the ditto copy of the Macaulay’s system of education which was designed by the British to produce the English speaking clerks to man the administration who were Indians in blood and colour but English in taste. This was achieved with the denigration of the Indian culture and values .Creativity and originality where absent in the education policy and the results are before us. There is immediate need to liberate the education from the continuing colonial mindset and restore our past glory as a reputed global destination for higher learning. At present the students are running to universities for getting of the degrees but the degrees cannot help them to stand on their legs. An anomalous situation has been created where the PHD holder applies for the petty post of a peon which is a shameful. It needs great introspection as to what our Countries and societies needs are. We hardly need the number of the university graduates in the country. There should be some sort of screening and competency mapping tests before entering into the university. Only those students should be allowed to enter the university who can qualify the mapping tests. Only those found suitable should be encouraged for the degree courses.
Our educational system should be in tune with the requirements of the society. We have to create a sense of entrepreneurship amongst our youth so that instead of seeking the jobs for themselves they should be job providers .This is the need of the hour that instead of being the job seekers the education system should give the society the job providers .For this we would need to provide professional career counselling in high school and intermediate levels. We need to inculcate the value of dignity of the labour in the students. Rote learning and memorising the long passages may have some relevance in those good olden days but today it is not needed. Our education policy should be designed to ensure optimum utilisation of the abundant creative energies of our youth rather than inhibiting them in any way. For this it is necessary that the Hindi and other vernacular languages should be encouraged at the university level. We should not have the inferiority complex about our own language though in the global context the need of English language is also there but inspite of this there is tremendous need of our own languages. Our universities should have good standards of education so that the students from the foreign countries will enrol themselves for the education and this is possible only when qualitative education and learning is provided by our universities. Anyway there is urgent need for reform of the educational policies so that the education will give us the skilled and required man power and also provide individuals with balanced personality.
