Rain still eludes Kashmir, fresh warning issued by Met | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, July 18: Dry spell continued badly hitting farming and orchards as rain still eludes Kashmir valley, where a fresh weather warning has been issued on Saturday for isolated thundershowers, lightening and gusty winds during the next four days. However, dozens of houses besides fruit crops were damaged due to gusty winds in the valley in June and July, when deficit rainfall was recorded in Srinagar. Mirpur in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK) recorded 29.4 degree minimum temperature, highest in the region followed by Muzafarabad, capital of POK 23 degree. summer capital of Union Territory (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir recorded 18.8 degree minimum temperature, highest in the Kashmir valley. A Met department spokesman issuing a weather warning on Saturday said there could be isolated thundershowers, lightening and 30 km to 40 km per hour gusty winds from today till July 22 in Kashmir and Jammu divisions. however, there is no such warning for Ladakh, where weather will remain mainly dry, he said. Weather warnings in the past also could not bring any relief to people who are facing dry and humid situation due to no rainfall during the past one month. however, in some areas gusty winds damaged houses and fruit crops in the valley. several political parties have demanded compensation for affected farmers. Dry spell has badly hit farming and orchards in the valley, where farmers are using alternative irrigation methods. Spokesman said there could be isolated to scattered light rain or thundershowers in Jammu and Kashmir and mainly dry spell in Ladakh and isolated rain and thundershowers in Gilgit and Baltustan in POK during the next 24 hours. however, there could be increase in precipitation from July 20 which could result in Fairly Widespread (FWS) rain in Kashmir and WS rain in Jammu division. The maximum temperature on Friday was above normal in most areas in the J&K and POK. Mirpur was 38.5 degree maximum and 29.4 degree minimum temperature, highest in POK, followed by Muzaffarabad 33 degree maximum and 23 degree minimum temperature. Gilgit and Skardu recorded 33 degree and 22 degree and 28.8 degree and 17.3 degree maximum and minimum temperatures during the past 24 hours respectively. The maximum and minimum temperatures were 32 degree and 18.8 degree respectively in Srinagar, where fresh lockdown from Monday due to spike increase in the COVID-19 positive patients. The sky would be partly cloudy with light rain or thundershowers and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 32 degree and 19 degree respectively during the next 24 hours in Srinagar, which had received 47 mm rainfall since June Ist till yesterday which was 18 mm below normal.
