Despite repeated requests, Deptt not giving permission of Khair tree felling | Forest Dept turns deaf ears to grievance of farmers | | Early Times Report
Jammu, July 18: The dilly dallying approach being adopted by the Forest Department in giving permission of felling Khair trees to farmers, hundreds of farmers across the Jammu region have been facing difficulty as they are not able to cultivate other crops on their land. The aggrieved farmers told Early Times that earlier in the month of March, the department had issued permission of felling of Khair trees but soon after the lockdown imposed across the country, the felling was stopped. “Due to lockdown, only a few Khair trees were felled. Later the department issued notification of transportation of felled trees but didn’t issue permission of felling of the rest trees, due to which we could not cultivate other crops on our land,” they said. They further informed that they submitted a number of applications to the concerned officials as well as to Chief Conservator Forest (CCF) for allowing them to fell the left out Khair trees so that they could earn some income in this difficult time and they might be able to cultivate other crops on their land. “It has been months but no action has been taken by the department till date due to which around 250 farmers belonging to various districts including Jammu, Kathua, Samba, Udhampur, Reasi and Rajouri have been suffering a lot,” they informed further adding that although CCF is empowered with all powers to issue permission but their grievances are still unheard. We have been running pillar to post to redress our burning problem but we are not being listened to by the concerned department, they lamented. “If trees are not felled then how can we cultivate next crops on that land which has blocked our source of income also. We are poor farmers and have no other source of income due to COVID-19 pandemic,” they said.
