Fee Fixation Committee to scrutinize earnings of pvt schools
8/22/2020 12:21:48 AM

EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, Aug 21: The Fee Fixation Committee (FFC) of J&K government will initiate an exercise to take an account of the earnings of private schools that are often blamed for charging arbitrary fees from the parents.
Principal Secretary, Skill Development and School Education Department, Dr Asgar Hassan Samoon has given enough indications of what will be the government's plans in this regard through one of his tweets.
Samoon tweeted that the Committee will scrutinize the earnings and also where the schools have been exactly spending the extra money charged from the parents after increasing the fee every year. Responding to Samoon’s tweet, someone asked him when such a fact finding exercise will be taken up. To this, Samoon retorted by saying “very soon”, adding that no fee is being charged from the children in government schools as those studying there are exempted from paying fee but private schools not only charge fee but also increases it every year.
Under the guidelines issued by the government, the schools have to get permission from the Fee Fixation Committee before raising the fee and they also have to explain why the private school needs to enhance the fee.
But it is often seen that the private schools increase the fee every year without taking prior permission, while the parents are left with no option other than to pay the increased fee even as most of them remain unwilling to do so. Reacting to Samoon’s comments, several parents described it as a good move, while some sought to change some of the members of the Fee Fixation Committee. Some people also demanded that these private schools be audited by an independent agency rather than the Fee Fixation Committee.
It is in place to mention here that the Principal Secretary Asgar Samoon remains quite active on twitter and he keeps on giving information about his actions from time to time through his tweets.
