Domicile issue: Ladakh political leaders join hands, LAHDC also extends support | Leadership of Himalayan region vows to protect ethnicity, jobs, land | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Sept 5: Resentment and rage against the Domicile Law is fast brewing up in Union Territory of Ladakh as leaders from across the political spectrum of the Himalayan region have begun making efforts to put up a united face to protect the land and jobs for the locals. Keeping their political differences aside, leaders cutting across party lines came on a joint platform in Leh in a bid to unite the people against Domicile Law in the Union Territory of Ladakh. “They (political leaders) are seeking to restrict the rights of land, jobs exclusively to the natives. In Ladakh, senior leaders of various political parties have launched a campaign against domicile for protection of rights of the Ladakhis,” said a political analyst. The analyst said that by raising the issue from a joint platform, the leaders of various political parties have sown the seeds to become a forceful voice for the people of Ladakh in the times to come as a combined leadership of such magnitude will not only going to be vocal but it also has the potential not to be ignored by New Delhi at any cost. “With the BJP-led Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh also came out in support and made it clear that no compromise will be made on the issue of protection of rights of the people viz a viz the cultural heritage of Ladakh. The Hill Council has also passed a resolution insisting that the interests of the original inhabitants of Ladakh be ensured through Article 371 or the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. The proposal has been passed in the presence of BJP MP Jamyang Tsering Namgyal,” he said. Among the leaders who came on the joint platform to seek protection of the rights of the Ladakhis included former Rajya Sabha MP Thiksey Rinpoche, former BJP MP Thupastan Chhewang-who resigned from Lok Sabha in November 2018 and quit the party, former Minister Chering Dorjay, Ladakh Congress chief Nawang Rigzin Jora and former Chief Executive Councilor/ Chairman LAHDC-Leh, Rigzin Spalbar, who recently left the Congress party. “This bunch of strong leadership of Ladakh is campaigning vigorously to bring people on a joint platform so as to fight for the emotive issue of preserving the interests of Ladakh. They know the importance of taking all on board and to put up a united face to protect their own unique identity,” said the analyst. “On the other hand, BJP will also try to work overnight to fulfill the demand of Ladakh people before the launch of a mass movement in Ladakh on this issue. Some inputs suggest that the BJP unit of the region has already made the party high command aware of the situation. The local BJP leadership is trying its best to convince the party bosses in New Delhi to take a decision that fulfills the aspirations of Ladakh,” he added. |
