Retired MES employee becomes successful farmer | | | Early times Report
Reasi, Oct 9: It is said that there is no substitute of hard work and ultimately hard work pays. It has been proved by an innovative farmer, S.Gurdev Singh who hails from Bharakh village in Pouni block of Reasi district of Union Territory of J&K. S.Gurdev Singh is 65 years old, retired MES (Military Engineering Services) employee who has emerged as an innovative farmer of his area by beating all the constraints. In 2015, he retired from his job and thought for the commercial farming. With his dedicated hard work, he has set an example for the other farmers of the area by growing the organic fruits, vegetables, and medicinal and aromatic plants, sugarcane, sunflower etc. He has established a fruit orchard in which he grows mango, aonla, guava, litchi etc. plants of improved and hybrid varieties. He has also established a beekeeping unit and dairy unit at his farm which he is maintaining in a scientific way. Initially he was using the traditional technologies at his farm with the least profits. Then he developed a good rapport with the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi scientists who upgraded his knowledge on scientific farmer. A series of visits were made by KVK, Reasi scientists at his farm and upgraded his technical knowledge. This enabled him for the scientific cultivation of different crops. With the scientific technologies, his production and productivity of different crops started increasing. He was also supported by the Department of Agriculture and allied departments. He was highly co-ordinated by his wife for his farm activities. The couple is doing the scientific farming at their 1.5 ha of land.
