Farmer bill could lead to exploitation of farmers: Manohar | | | Early Times Report
Kathua, oct 9: Former minister and President DCC Kathua Dr Manohar Lal Sharma termed recently passes farms bill as “anti-farmer”, and said it could lead to exploitation of farmers by big corporations. While chairing public meeting at Jasrotia Palace ,Dayalachak of Billawar assembly Dr Sharma said the legislation does not guarantee acquisition of farm produce at the minimum support price (MOSP), thus leaving them at the mercy of corporations that are now expected to enter the country’s troubled farming sector as the new legislation promotes contract farming and gives them no protection as nobody knows what will happen to farmers who cultivate crops on small lands and sell their produce in the local market. Dr Sharma said that more than half of India’s farmers are reportedly in debt, with 20,638 committing suicide in 2018 and 2019, according to India’s National Crime Records Bureau. After Modi came to power in 2014, he promised to double farmers’ income by 2022, however, the situation hasn’t improved. Also speaking on occasion Former MLC Subash gupta said that the government is under pressure to bring private investments to the agriculture sector that has stagnated over the past decades. Further he said the bills were passed “unconstitutionally” in “complete disregard” of parliamentary norms and are anti-farmer and corporate-friendly. Dr Sharma said none of its policies over the last six years has benefitted the poor. “They passed the three black farm bills amid the coronavirus outbreak. What was the haste in doing it at this time? They did it because they thought the farmers would not be able to do anything, but they do not know the power of the farmer. |
