Mughal road remains shut on third day due to snow | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Nov 16: The historic 86-km-long Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region, remained closed for the third successive day on Monday due to snowfall and slippery road condition. However, there is so far no direction from the authorities to close the road, seen as alternative to Srinagar-Jammu highway, for six winter months as reported in the media, a traffic police official told UNI on Monday. He said the Mughal road remained closed due to two to three feet of snowfall at several places, including Pir-ki-Gali. The road has become slippery and there is also threat of avalanche, he said adding due to sub zero temperature during the night, the road has also become slippery. He said traffic on the road will be allowed only after the snow is cleared and road become safe for journey. The road was this year used to transport fruit from the Kashmir valley to different mandis across the country due to frequently closure of the Srinagar-Jammu highway due to landslides and shooting stones. Traffic on the road was suspended in December last year due to snowfall. However, it remained closed for any traffic movement due to COVID-19 and was finally put through for one way traffic in June this year. Traffic spokesman when asked about the media reports that the Mughal road has been closed for winter months, said no such direction has been received so far from the authorities. The Centre has already approved a tunnel to make it all weather road. However, the project has not seen any progress for a decade despite repeated assurances by the central and local governments. Once the road becomes all-weather, it would certainly ease the miseries of people on both sides of Pir-ki-Gali besides essentials can also be routed through this road to ease the burden on the national highway. |
