Fingers Crossed | | | As the stage is set for the results of the District Development Council elections, which were held in Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir in the eight phases recently, political parties have kept their fingers crossed and are waiting anxiously. The leaders of these parties are aware of the fact that these elections were not that big but these were important as these were the maiden polls in the union territory after the abrogation of Article 370. Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD)—an amalgam of Kashmir centric parties—which was formed just few days before the DDC polls were announced had been claiming that it will sweep the elections but the exit polls results suggest that the conglomerate is struggling on many seats. The results of these elections will decide the future of politics in the newly carved out union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. If the PAGD is able to win the good number of seats in Kashmir and if the BJP is able to do well in Jammu, it would mean that the forthcoming elections in J&K would be fought between these two parties. The BJP has friends in Kashmir that can support the saffron party and help it in every possible way. The BJP will have to rely on its friends in Kashmir as it making inroads in the Valley still looks a difficult task. Some exit poll results suggest that this time around the BJP may open its account in the Valley. Whoever, wins the DDC elections is not important what’s more important is whether the PAGD will remain intact after the results or it will break. As it’s lot of confusion prevailed within the PAGD over the seat sharing arrangement for the DDC polls. At many places the PAGD candidates were fighting against the activists from NC and PDP who had filled up their forms as independent candidates. Soon after the differences within the conglomerate came to fore voices within the PAGD to contest the next elections individually became shriller, even some leaders of these parties declared alliance as a failed experiment. It appears that the PAGD leaders have not been able to keep their flock together and the future of the amalgam looks bleak. Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir are slated to be held after the delimitation exercise is completed. At that point of time Jammu and Kashmir will have equal number of assembly seats and Valley based parties will find it hard to make a comeback. It appears that the PAGD has lost the battle even before it has commenced. |
