Snowfall exposes ill equipped SMC | Srinagar as Smart City? | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 9: The recent snowfall in Srinagar seems to have exposed the Srinagar Municipal Corporation that was beating the trumpet of making Srinagar a Smart City. The inundation of inner streets, the blockade of roads leading to hospitals, the collapsed drainage system has proven beyond doubt that the much hyped Smart City project was Srinagar has been dumped by none other than the SMC itself. Social media these days is abuzz with the reports about how the Municipal Corporation of Srinagar has miserably failed on ground in spite of the fact that crores of rupees from the public money have been spent on the procurement of machinery and equipment for snow clearances. Facebook, twitter and whatsapp continue to remain infested with the pictures of main roads and streets not being cleared on the snow despite days passed since the occurrence of the whiteout. “This road leads to SHMS hospital in Srinagar. See its condition and how the snow from the road has not been cleared. Imagine what will happen to a person who is carried here in a critical condition. Who will be responsible for the fallout of such inaction of the SMC,” asked a netzien while posting a picture of SHMS road near to the Karan Nagar side on his facebook page. There were many who questioned how the government could declare Srinagar a smart city when a snowfall for two days paralysed the entire city and SMC was not able to even clear the snow from the crucial city roads. “We cannot blame the central government for everything. It is the inefficacy of our own authorities that such a situation is emerging that vital projects are dumped and turned into flop shows,” says another netizen. SMC was also earlier ridiculed when it was declared as one of the polluted cities in India and even then people questioned how Srinagar could get the status of the smart city when its pollution is touching new heights. As per data available on SMC website 450 metric tons of solid waste is generated with the SMC limits on a daily basis. Due to various reasons this waste is not at all treated and is finally dumped at Achen landfill site in Srinagar. As per the power point presentation uploaded on SMC website for seeking feedback on developing Srinagar into a Smart City not even in a single residential area (colonies , mohallas etc) or commercial establishments have the facility of segregation of solid waste . Due to absence of this facility all the waste (biodegradable / non biodegradable) generated in these areas is lifted in SMC vehicles and dumped unscientifically without any treatment. Pertinently, the State Government vide Order No.1081-GAD dated August 21, 2017 constituted Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) as Companies Limited by shares named as Jammu Smart City Limited and Srinagar Smart City Limited under the Companies Act, 2013 with authorized share capital of Rs 10 lakh, equity share of Rs 10 each and paid up capital of Rs 10 lakh for both the companies for implementation of smart city development projects. |
