AP express concern over plight of truckers stranded on highway | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Jan 12: Expressing serious concern over the plight of truckers, stranded due to closure of the Srinagar-Jammu national highway for the second day on Tuesday, a senior Apni Party (AP) leader urged government to immediately provide them at least basic facilities, including water and mobile toilets. AP provincial vice president (Kashmir) Jagmohan Singh Raina, in a statement, expressed disappointment and displeasure over the continuous plight of truck drivers and conducted who are stranded along the Srinagar-Jammu national highway. Mr Raina, who is also Chairman of All Parties Sikh Coordination Committee (APSCC) demanded formation of a committee to look into the problems being faced by these truckers at different locations along the highway. He said that the drivers are facing numerous problems and the administration has miserably failed to come to their rescue. He said these drivers are stuck at different snow bound areas on this side of the Jawahar tunnel along the highway, where there is no facility for their stay or food. These drivers, who had come from different parts of the country with essentials and other goods, are the worst hit due to closure of the highway. The administration should wake up from the slumber and take necessary steps that would bring relief to these helpless people. It is the duty of the administration to provide succour to the people who are facing difficulties due to frequent closure of the highway, said Raina. He demanded that proper food and shelter should be provided to the drivers who are stuck between Qazigund-Jawahar tunnel and Ramsu-Batote stretches on the highway. He said that since no bathroom facilities are available in the areas where they have been stopped, the administration should put in place mobile toilets so that they don't face further problems. The highway, the only all weather road connecting Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was closed on Sunday evening after a retaining wall of Kela Morh bridge at Ramban collapsed. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), responsible for the maintenance of the highway has already announced that it will take five days to repair the damage. Over 5,000 trucks, oil tankers and other vehicles are stranded on both sides of the Kela Morh bridge as there is no alternative available to clear these vehicles. |
