Mehbooba fails to dominate Kashmir politics; gives up, turns silent
1/12/2021 11:02:23 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Jan 12: President of Peoples Democratic Party and former J&K chief minister, Mehbooba Mufti went into a silent mode after the results of the recently held District Development Council (DDC) elections were declared.
It’s in place to mention here that PDP just managed to win 27 DDC constituencies in J&K and failed to live upto the expectations. Mehbooba was very vocal after playing a pivotal role in shaping up the Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD)—an amalgam of Kashmir centric parties. She had created an impression that Valley based parties together will become a force to reckon with but all her assumptions and calculations didn’t work.
An analyst while talking to Early Times said, “Mehbooba has gone silent as she has realized that her party doesn’t stand anywhere.
Another reason for her silence could be the leaders of her party being grilled in terror funding cases.”
He said that soon after her release from 14-month detention last year, she had created lot of noise.
“Mehbooba had tried to create a notion that she is the only leader as she has served the longest detention period. Many in Kashmir believe that Mehbooba wanted to dominate Valley’s political scene by creating PAGD,” the analyst added.
He said, “After the results of the DDC polls were declared, the NC leaders, Farooq Abdullah and his son Omar Abdullah completely ignored Mehbooba and it was evident that the father-son duo was maintaining distance from her.”
An observer said, “Mehbooba needs to sit back and introspect to know why even her close aides have abandoned her. Soon after the coalition government led by Mehbooba collapsed in J&K, her own party men deserted her. The PDP was left at crossroads as most of the party leaders changed their loyalties.”
He said, “Mehbooba was under the impression that after serving detention, she will get a very good response from the people and she would emerge as the tallest leader in Kashmir. But that has not happened as people have outrightly rejected her brand of politics.”
The observer said, “Nothing seems to have gone right for Mehbooba as her fight for the so-called bigger cause to get everything back has no takers. Not even a few leaders, who are left in her party. It appears that she can no more make the noise as her slogans and tantrums have lost the appeal.”
