Early Times Report

Jammu, Feb 21: A sudden rise in the incidents of “cyber attacks” have put the Jammu and Kashmir government on tenterhooks.
Sources said in the last few months, there has been a rise in the number of cyber attacks on the Jammu and Kashmir government whereby either social media handles were hacked or fake profiles of top ranking dignitaries were created.
In the latest, a fake account of Senior Superintendent of Police Shailendra Mishra was created. The fake account came into public domain soon after Mishra was honored by the Indian Army for his meritorious and extraordinary services as the police chief of Kathua district.
Mishra has already put an alert in the public domain that a fake ID in his name for active.
Such cyber activities have been so shocking that no sooner Manoj Sinha took over as the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, a fake twitter handle had started tweeting in his disguise.
Interestingly, the social media handle of then Governor SP Malik was closed for some time following “complaints of cyber attacks.”
A cyber expert said such a sustained activity of cyber attacks was not possible without support from “external forces.”
“You cannot rule out the possibility of the enemy country having put a cyber army on the job only target India and national interests in Jammu and Kashmir in particular,” said a senior IT expert on the condition of anonymity.
Sources said the issue of cyber attacks on the government establishment was discussed at highest quarters.
Sources said the government looks ahead to beef up the cyber security in Jammu and Kashmir and that more experts could be roped in for the job.
“When from the Raj Bhawan to police officials, everyone in the government is facing cyber attacks, the digital world can’t be taken so lightly and thus things are being discussed at highest level,” said a senior official on the condition of anonymity.
