On Mehbooba’s coronation day, absence of 2 senior leaders hints at yet another split
After south, now north Kashmir slipping out of PDP’s hands

Early Times Report

Jammu, Feb 22: As Mehbooba Mufti was chosen as the PDP president on Monday, the absence of a former Member Parliament and a former cabinet minister from north Kashmir has raised eyebrows, hinting yet another split within the already crisis strewn political group.
According to the PDP spokesman, People's Democratic Party electoral college today elected Mehbooba Mufti as party president for a period of three years. Party General Secretary Ghulam Nabi Lone Hanjura proposed the name of Mehbooba Mufti as the candidate for the post of party president. The proposal was seconded by senior leader Khursheed Alam. Chairman election board of the party A R Veeri conducted the proceeding. Earlier the party`s electoral college from Jammu province unanimously elected Mehbooba Mufti as the party president. In a meeting held at party headquarters at Gandhinagar,Jammu, party senior leader and former MLC Yashpal Sharma proposed Mufti`s name which was seconded by Bharat Bhushan Gupta. The election board had appointed senior leader and former MLC Surinder Chaudhary as Returning Officer for Jammu province.
However, PDP MP who was nominated to Rajya Sabha by the party- Fayaz Mir and former cabinet minister Abul Haq Khan didn’t attend the event, setting the rumour mills rife about another split within the PDP in offing. Prior to this, when Mehbooba was on a two day visit to north Kashmir recently, the same two leaders were not invited to attend the public rallies.
Sources have divulged that the widening wedge between these leaders and the party has led to the possibility of the duo joining some rival camp. “This way, the PDP will have no MP associated with it any longer. First Tariq Karra, then Nazir Laway followed by Muzzafar Hussain Beigh and now Fayaz Mir- all these leaders were the MPs from the PDP once and now not even a single one is associated with the party. What else could be termed as the dooms’ day for the PDP if not this?,” asked a senior functionary.
The former PDP patron Muzaffar Hussain in the year 2019 was awarded Padma Bhushan that too at a time when the entire PDP leadership, including party President Mehbooba Mufti, was in jail. In the year 2018, there were speculations earlier rife that Beigh who has been one of the founding members of the PDP will join PC and announce its departure from PDP in which he spent around 19 years since 1999.
Last year, the former PDP leader got many shots in the arm when a barrage of the PDP leaders which include the law makers and former cabinet ministers joined his new front that demands restoration of statehood in Jammu and Kashmir. As many as 11 former cabinet ministers in the past have left the PDP and joined other fronts in Jammu and Kashmir. All those who have left have in unison spoken about the alleged highhanded approach of the PDP president and how they were treated in the party.
