Jammu, Apr 1: In the wake of memorandum of understanding signed between the Jammu Municipal Corporation with Indian Pollution Control Association (IPCA) around two years ago to implement plastic waste management and make Jammu a plastic-free city, first Material Recovery Facility has been installed here at Bhagwati Nagar. As per official communique, Indian Pollution Control Association has set-up a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) for which Jammu Municipal Corporation has provided all logistic support like land, shed, electricity, etc IPCA committed to operate and maintain the facilities provided by JMC for which, the very first MRF has been inaugurated at Bhagwati Nagar, Ambika Vihar, Jammu with an aim to strengthen the supply chain of post consumer plastic waste. IPCA is working towards effective collection and segregation of plastic waste to make Jammu a plastic and litter free city of the Country, said the handout. It further said that the MRF will receive plastic waste from households, markets, and from the rag-pickers community, which will be segregated into different categories and get compressed through hydraulic baler installed at the MRF. IPCA will also channelize segregated plastic waste to its respective recyclers / co-processor for its recycling. The first Material Recovery Facility (MRF) has been inaugurated in the event on March 31 with the aim to handle 5 metric ton plastic per day. The MRF inaugurated by Chander Mohan Gupta, Mayor, Jammu and Ms. Avny Lavasa, Commissioner, JMC. The event was attended by Ms. Tinna Mahajan, Secretary, JMC, Deputy Mayor, Jammu, Ashish Jain, Director, IPCA, and Ranvir Singh, Project Coordinator, IPCA. Gupta said that, "Such initiatives and centre is the need of an hour to manage the menance of plastic waste in the city." "With help of many such centers we can increase the rate of collection and segregation of plastic waste and provide solution to the MLP waste," he said. Lavasa said that, "Through today's event we intend to promote decentralised waste management and create awareness among the people." Material Recovery Facility will help channelization of low-grade plastic waste to its recyclers or co-processor more effectively and economically. MRF will function as secondary segregation and semi-mechanised center to increase the segregation rate of different grades of plastic and to reduce the logistic cost to handle the plastic waste. Such center or model is very much required for sustainable plastic waste management and smart city model said, Mr. Ashish Jain, Founder and Director, IPCA.
