Trying To Get Closer | | | National Conference vice-president and former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister, Omar Abdullah, is apparently trying to come close to the Centre by endorsing any positive gesture made by the leaders in New Delhi. When recently, Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, passed on the “get well soon” message to NC president Dr Farooq Abdullah, Omar wasted no time to convey his gratitude to the Prime Minister. It appears Omar has realized that Kashmir centric leaders cannot exist without the blessings of New Delhi and if the NC wants to reappear at the political arena of Kashmir it will have to remain in the good books of the leaders in the national capital. Omar soon after his release from detention had dropped enough hints that his party wants to move on despite change in J&K’s status-quo but a few leaders within his party and some outsiders made him take a U-turn. Despite the National Conference heading People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD)—an amalgam of Kashmir centric parties—Omar didn’t show any interest or inclination towards it. He stayed away from the meetings of the conglomerate that were held soon after it was formed to fight for the so-called “bigger cause.” Omar even stopped his father Dr Farooq Abdullah from taking much interest in PAGD and asked him to focus on his own party. After the results of District Development Council elections were announced in J&K, Omar rather than projecting bagging of 102 seats as collective victory of the amalgam claimed that it was NC’s win. When the Peoples Conference led by Sajad Gani Lone accused the NC of backstabbing it by fielding proxy candidates in Kupwara, Omar did not react nor did he allow his father to say anything, which led to the PC pulling out from the PAGD. The leaders of the amalgam have not met for the past many months. The bonhomie between the Kashmir centric is almost over and the PAGD is awaiting a formal burial. Omar has realized that Article 370 won’t come back, neither will the Kashmir centric leaders get sweeping powers in near future. It looks like he has reconciled with the fact that New Delhi only can help the NC to survive. It appears that Omar has fallen in the line and is waiting for a chance to build strong relations with the Centre. Now, it remains to be seen will New Delhi respond? |
