Recruitment of doctors going on at snail's pace in Jammu | | | Early Times Report jammu, Apr 10: As the second wave of deadly Coronavirus is spreading dangerously in the Union Territory of J&K, the problem of shortage of doctors and paramedical staff also comes to the fore with the increasing number of patients. In the month of August, 2020, the government had initiated the process to appoint doctors on a fast track basis but due to the casual approach of authorities at the helm of the affairs process is going on snail's place. As per available data, almost all hospitals and other health centres across Jammu region are confronting with the shortage of doctors and para medical staff. During the first wave of Coronavirus, the J&K government had announced to recruit 900 doctors to 'treating' the 'ailing' health infrastructure in the peripheral and far-flung areas. It was announced that recruitment will be made on a fast-track basis and candidates have been asked to apply only on-line but till date most of the hospitals are facing shortage of doctors. It was clearly mentioned in the recruitment notification that the selected candidates will have to work in peripheral and far-flung areas of the UT of J&K. Authorities had decided to conduct fast-track recruitment of doctors as above 500 medical officers recruited three year back were dismissed from services for not joining their duties after appointment. After their recruitment these doctors were appointed in the peripheral areas but they had not joined their place of postings. The doctor patient ratio in J&K is 1:1880 as against the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO) of 1:1000, which is grossly in-sufficient. According to official documents, in the medical education sector out of the total 2192 sanctioned strength of doctors 710 posts have been lying vacant. Similarly in the department of health services, out of a total sanctioned strength of 4617 doctors 1653 posts of doctors have been lying vacant in the health institutes across the state. The Department of Health Services looks after health centres including hospitals across the UT. |
