Jammu, Apr 19: A gang from the Uttar Pradesh has been active in the winter capital of Jammu and adjoining Udhampur districts. A police official said the gang of at least five persons, including a mother-son duo were active in Jammu before they fled to Srinagar and were caught. As per police officials, the gangsters had targeted some jewellery shops in the busy Raghunath Bazar area here before targeting similar establishments in Udhampur while on way to Kashmir. A senior official told Early Times that the gang had entered Jammu on April 12 and decided to target jewelry shops in particular. The gangsters would enter jewelry shops pretending to be customers. As per the modus operandi, the gang would buy some “small gold item to win faith of the jeweler and would subsequently ask him to show more gold items.” “When the shopkeeper would move towards the locker to get more gold items, the gang members would quickly steal some of the gold items in showcase before them,” the official added. Sources said the gang had decided to be active in Jammu and Srinagar and that they had found the winter capital their “most favored prey.” “They had managed to steal more jewelry from Jammu than Srinagar,” said one official on the condition of anonymity. While the Srinagar police trapped them in Hari Singh High Street area where most of the jewelry shops are located, one of the gangsters managed to flee. Sources said the gangsters during interrogation told police that they had found Jammu markets easy prey and that many such gangs were eyeing to target the winter capital. “The shopkeepers must remain vigilant and should also install CCTVs as it prevents such thefts,” said the police official. Meanwhile sources said police apprehend that the gangster who managed to give a slip to police must have fled to Jammu. “Hiding in Kashmir will be difficult for him, he may have fled to Jammu and will be trapped soon,” said one police official on the condition of anonymity. A senior police official said while some recovery of stolen gold items has been made, the interrogation of the accused was on and that more leads were expected in the case.
