No traffic on Srinagar-Jammu national highway today | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
Srinagar, May 4: No traffic will be allowed on Wednesday on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway, the only all weather road connecting Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, a traffic police official said on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the historic Mughal road, linking Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region, remained closed through snow clearance operation was completed last month. Traffic official said that traffic will remain suspended tomorrow to allow National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to undertake necessary maintenance and repair work. The Union Territory (UT) has decided to close national highway on every Wednesday for maintenance, he said. However, he said Light Motor Vehicles (LMV), carrying passengers were allowed to ply from Jammu to Srinagar today. Vehicles had to cross Nagrota between 0700 hrs to 1200 hrs and Jekhani Udhampur from 0800 hrs to 1300 hrs , he said adding no vehicle will be allowed after cut off timing. He said Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMVs) will be allowed to move towards Srinagar after tail of LMVs cross Jekhani Udhampur. Security forces will also ply from Jammu to Srinagar today, he said. The historic 86-km-long Mughal road, seen as alternative to Srinagar-Jammu national highway remained closed though snow clearance operation has been completed since December last year. Several political leaders and residents living on both sides of the road expressed their concern over continued closure of the road despite clearance of snow. However, private vehicles are plying on the road illegally, they alleged. |
