EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, May 13: The Union Health Ministry today sent a Central team of doctors to assess the grim Covid-19 situation primarily in Jammu region while the detection of some new variants as well as increasing death rate is likely to be the primary focus areas of the team.
According to the order issued by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and signed by Joint Secretary Lav Aggarwal, a Central team of three doctors has been constituted, which will visit the Jammu region alone shortly, in view of the increasing number of Covid-19 cases being reported
The team consisted of Dr Pranay Verma Joint Director Epidemiology division NCDC New Delhi, Dr. Mahesh Waghmare, Microbiology NCDC Delhi and Dr Navneet Sharma Professor, Department of Internal Medicine Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) Chandigarh.
The team has been entrusted to undertake visits immediately, to visit hotspot areas, ascertain reasons for the surge in the number of Covid-19 cases and brief the chief Administrator about key findings and recommendations and the remedial measures to be undertaken. On completion of the visit the team shall submit the report to DM Cell Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
An official privy to the development informed Early Times that so far the visit of the team was focused to Jammu region alone. “Despite the fact that the total number of positive cases are high in Kashmir valley but the focus of the team is Jammu region alone and it is probably due to the fact that the death rate in Jammu region in comparison to the positive cases is quite high due to which the Central team is visiting Jammu alone”, the official said.
On being asked if the team has any plan to visit Kashmir valley also, the official said that as of now there was no plan of the team to visit Kashmir valley also.
Moreover, the visit of the Central team to Jammu also gained significance in view of the revelation made by none other than Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan on Thursday.
“Cases are increasing very rapidly in Jammu and Kashmir and different variants are being found there.....” the Minister said while interacting with State Health Ministers and Principal Secretaries/ Additional Chief Secretaries of 8 states/UT including Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Punjab, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and Telangana.
“The visit to the Central Team to Jammu alone as well as high mortality rate in Jammu along with revelation made by Union Minister about new variant only signals towards the fact that the detection of new variant as well as high mortality rate will be focus areas of the team”, the official said, adding that there were possibilities that the high mortality rate in Jammu might be linked to the detection of some new variant.
