Where are 400 ventilators procured by Health Department? | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, May 15: Health and Medical Education Department has purchased as many as 400 ventilators during the first wave of deadly Coronavirus but it is still a mystery where these ventilators are installed. As per a letter of Managing Director, Medical Supply Corporation Jammu on March 28, 2020, order for the procurement of 400 ventilators was placed on an immediate basis “to restrict the spread of COVID-19”. Sources said that during the first wave of COVID in the year 2020, Rs 240.10 crores were spent on purchasing various equipment to ‘contain the spread of the deadly virus. Despite spending such a huge among of purchasing equipment, the system completely collapsed during the second wave of the virus. Highly placed sources in the Health Department said that after purchasing these ventilators some of the machines were dispatched in the peripheries without deputing technical staff. Most of these ventilators are gathering dust in the hospitals of peripheries because higher-ups in the Health Department failed recruit trained staff for the same. Sources said that huge purchases were made during the last one year by the Health and Medical Education Department from the funds allocated to J&K UT under the PM Care scheme. Except in some health centres of Poonch and Rajouri, these ventilators are lying defunct in other places due to the non-availability of technical staff to handle these machines. Not only order of 400 ventilators was placed but the department has also purchased 4000 portable oxygen concentrators, but these concentrators are not available for patients. |
