Poor need help, ration | | | Jammu and Kashmir administration easing the COVID-19 lockdown restrictions may bring some respite for the people living under Below Poverty Line (BPL) especially in Jammu region. During the ongoing lockdown, people living under BPL complained about no one from administration reaching out to them. At many places these poor people said that they would die of starvation rather than COVID-19 if the officials fail to come for their rescue. These people claimed that when the lockdown was enforced during the first COVID-19 wave last year they had received enough help from all the quarters but this time around they were left to fend on their own. These poor people have genuine grievances. They are jobless and have to survive on alms which their women folk are collecting by going door to door. Soon after the lockdown was imposed in J&K last the government had announced that people living under BPL will be provided free ration and Rs 1000 as sustenance allowance. A few people have been provided the special assistance announced by the government but many have been left out. There are many slums in and around Jammu city and slum dwellers are facing immense hardship. They need immediate relief and help. The NGOs and the government should come forward to help these poor souls as they haven’t been left with anything to survive. Officials, who have been asked to identify the poor and needy, should take note of sufferings of the people living under BPL. These officials need to walk an extra mile as their effort can help many people survive the tough times that all of us are caught in at present. For time being lockdown restrictions have been just eased for three days in a week and it can take at least 2 to 3 months for normalcy to return that too if the pandemic relents. If the situation turns grim again we may have to face more difficult times. Besides the administration people have to help each other to ensure that no one sleeps hungry. Rich can come forward and play their role. Politicians should understand that these are COVID-19 times and they can’t indulge in cheap publicity stunts in the name of charity. If they want to do something for people they should do it silently. |
