JAMMU, June 26: Sangeet Natak Akademi’s Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Awardee and NSD alumni theatre director and trainer Rabijita Gogoi from Assam featured today at Natrang’s National Theatre Talk Show, ‘Young Voices of Theatre’ today where she shared his inspirational views with the global audience at the Facebook page of Natrang Jammu.
Rabijita is a theatre director, acting and theatre-design teacher working for the last 25 years. She has directed more than 40 plays in various languages like Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, English, Assamese and other North-eastern dialects like Karbi, Bodo and Nagamese of Nagaland. She has presented papers on theatre at International Ibsen Conference, Dhaka, Bangladesh in 2002, PURVA- Asian Women Theatre Artists Conference, New Delhi in 2003, 8th International Women Playwright’s Conference, Mumbai, 2009.
In an enriching conversation with Sangeet Natak Akademi Awardee actor and Natrang’s senior artist Anil Tickoo, Rabijita narrated her eventful journey of theatre, she discussed several aspects of theatre acting and theatre training and mentioned different methodologies which have been adopted worldwide.
For her, there is immense versatility in Indian folk and Classical arts and it needs to be appropriately revisited. Citing the relevance of Ethinic Theatre, she suggested it to be connected to roots as it gives depth to one’s performance. She has been working intensively on the folk-traditional arts of North Eastern States and has extensively interpreted and reinterpreted many established works. She states that there is a lot of vibrancy and colour in the art forms of North East, which may be developed into a distinctive language of theatre. She very interestingly stated that the success of theatre artists in Bollywood has created the need for theatre training for actors. Speaking about the present situation of the Corona crisis in which every artistic work had stopped, she devised new ways to train her students through virtual mediums. An optimistic person, Rabijita believes in possibilities rather than limitations. She opines that to become a good theatre teacher, one has to become a good student forever and should upgrade and update himself/herself consistently.
