Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, June 26: National Conference President, Dr. Farooq Abdullah today stoked a controversy when he accused former Prime Minister’s of the Congress party of backtracking from their promises and said that there is a lot of mistrust between the people of Jammu & Kashmir and New Delhi. Talking to media persons after his return from New Delhi, the National Conference President said that the first Prime Minister of the country had promised that a plebiscite would be held in Jammu & Kashmir. He said that later on another Prime Minister Narasimha Rao promised autonomy adding that both of them backtracked with the passage of time. “The first Prime Minister of the country promised that a plebiscite would be held in Jammu & Kashmir but later on backtracked from his promise. Many years later Prime Minister Narasimha Rao said that the Government of India is ready to give us anything, but not independence. We told him categorically that the National Conference does not stand for independence,” said the NC President. Dr. Abdullah said Rao stated that sky is the limit and New Delhi can go to any extent in fulfilling the genuine aspirations of the people of Jammu & Kashmir. He said that the Government of India had on the floor of the house promised that autonomy would be given to the people of Jammu & Kashmir adding that nothing of sort happened. “Let us not jump the gun and wait for a few days. We met the Prime Minister and made our position clear to him on various issues. There is a lot of mistrust between New Delhi and people of Jammu & Kashmir. Let us see what steps they take in order in order to remove this mistrust and for this we have to be patient,” said the NC President. Dr. Abdullah had gone to New Delhi to take part in the all party meeting called by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the situation of Jammu & Kashmir on June 24 (Thursday). He was joined by leaders like Mehbooba Mufti, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Omar Adbullah, Muzaffar Hussain Beig, Ravinder Raina, Mohammad Yusuf Tarigami, Ghulam Ahmad Mir, Tara Chand, Sajad Lone, Kavinder Gupta, Nirmal Singh, Bhim Singh and Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari. Speaking on the occasion, Omar Abdullah said that they will fight for the reversal of August 5, 2019 decision politically, legally, constitutionally and peacefully. “No leader stated in the meeting that they accept the August 5, 2019 decision. We told the meeting that people of J&K are angry and they want to roll back the decision,” he said. Omar said they can’t fool the people by stating that Article 370 would be restored by the Prime Minister. He said that the party has authorized Dr. Adbullah to take a call on the participation in the meetings called by the Delimitation Commission. He said that Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad made it clear in the meeting that statehood should be given first and then elections should be held in Jammu & Kashmir. |
