COVID: Restrictions back in Kashmir due to weekend curfew | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, June 26: Streets again wore a deserted look on Saturday as restrictions on movement of people and transportation remained imposed since Friday evening in view of weekend curfew to curtail the spread of COVID-19 virus in Kashmir valley. As many as 498 new positive cases, including 289 from Kashmir and 209 from Jammu, were on Friday reported in the Union Territory. Seven people, including five from Kashmir and two from Jammu, lost their lives to the infection on Friday, when a new case of mucormycosis was reported. Meanwhile, the Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) on Saturday sought a genome sequencing facility in the valley that would detect and track COVID-19 variants. “Picking up variants is key to formulate appropriate and effective health policy that would help prevent and control their spread in the community,” DAK President and influenza expert Dr Nisar ul Hassan said. Jammu and Kashmir administration has appealed to the Centre to provide 20 lakh COVID vaccine doses before July 10 to the Union Territory, where only 10 per cent of population in 18-45 age category have been vaccinated. Markets were on Saturday closed as shops and business established have been allowed to open on rotational basis between Mondays and Fridays in the valley, where the number of COVID positive cases has witnessed a significant decline during the last over a month. Most of the roads and market places, including Lal Chowk, the nerve centre of the summer capital were sealed since early on Friday evening to prevent movement of people. Shops and businesses established were closed though few private vehicles and three wheelers were plying in roads in downtown, civil lines, uptown in Srinagar in view of weekend curfew. Following decline in the number of COVID-19 cases in J&K, the Union Territory administration has in phases given relaxation in the restrictions that was imposed to curtail the spread of the infection. However, the night curfew between 1900 hrs and 0700 hrs the next day and weekend curfew from Friday evening to Monday morning continued. Business and other activities were crippled in central Kashmir districts of Budgam and Ganderbal, where roads have been closed with barbed wires in most parts to prevent movement of vehicles and people. Reports of similar restrictions were coming from other parts of the valley, including Sopore, Baramulla, Bandipora and Kupwara in north and Shopian, Anantnag, Pulwama and Kulgam in south Kashmir. Shops and business establishment were closed and road wore a deserted look in these districts, where police parties were patrolling their respective areas to ensure strict implementation of the weekend curfew. |
