Farmers at receiving end as canal tail-end dry, ground water depleted: Tony
7/7/2021 11:16:51 PM

Early Times Report

SUCHETGARH, July 7: Taranjit Singh Tony Member DDC Suchetgarh today raised the issues of severe power shortage, inadequate water in the canal and depleting water table in the entire border belt in the Suchetgarh constituency.
Addressing a gathering here after launching bifurcation of power lines in seven villages of Suchetgarh constituency, the DDC member said that hundreds of farmers in the border belt are feeling dejected during the Kharief season as none is coming for their rescue as the sowing of Basmati is affected due to water not yet reaching the tail-end of the canal while the tube wells have become defunct due to power outage and plummeting of ground water level. Tony expressed resentment against the working of Executive Engineer Division-I of the Canal Irrigation due to which the adequate water is not being reached at the tail-end of the canal. He alleged that he is wasting large quantity of water by releasing enough supply of water in the canal falling in Division- I as his stretch is less and area is less. While in another canal falling in Division –II whose area is much and stretch is also bigger but it’s not getting adequate quantity of water. The DDC member said that already the de-silting work has not been accomplished in the proper manner and the indifference of the department is forcing the farmers to face hardships especially during the sowing season when the requirement of the water is at peak. “As the rain God is also showing no mercy on the farmers the lethargy of the department is adding to their miseries”, he said and demanded that immediate steps should be taken to ensure that paddy crop fields get their rightful share of water at the last point on the border.
