Nailing orchestrators | | | Hurriyat hawk, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, is in the news after a long time. The Enforcement Directorate has reminded him to pay a penalty of Rs 14.4 lakh, imposed on him under the Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999. Geelani led the Hurriyat Conference supported by Pakistan for more than two decades and was instrumental in keeping the pot boiling in Kashmir for many years. He surprised many people in 2019 by releasing an audio clip in which he stated that he is resigning from the politics due to his ailing health and lack of discipline among the Hurriyat ranks. Before saying goodbye to separatism, Geelani had castigated Pakistan for turning younger generation of Kashmir into drug addicts by sending narcotics into the Valley. Since the day he has gone into oblivion, people have almost forgotten him. The fresh notice served by the Enforcement Directorate is a grim reminder of how separatists filled their coffers by selling the Kashmir conflict. After August 5, 2019—when the Centre announced its decision to abrogate J&K’s special status and divided it into two union territories—Kashmir scenario has changed drastically. Separatists, who used to call shots, are cooling their heels behind the bars. Hurriyat dove Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has turned silent and has been under house arrest for the past two years. Geelani has said goodbye to politics. Others who used to propagate hate and sedition against the State have lost their addresses. Many have been held accountable and who were left out are being asked to explain their acts. Whether Geelani will pay the penalty or not remains to be seen but one thing is clear that money pumped in by Pakistan through illegal channels into Jammu and Kashmir had played an important role to keep the conflict alive. Separatists, who are being asked to explain how they amassed huge wealth despite having no known sources of income have been left dumbfounded as they have no answer for anything. Had the erstwhile regimes not given a long rope to the separatists, situation in Kashmir could have been much better. The former rulers instead of tightening noose around the advocates of Pakistan went out of way to appease them and allowed them to carry on with their anti-national activities. Since August 5, 2019, Kashmir has not witnessed any street violence as the orchestrators have been nailed. |
