Amid power crisis in Jammu this summer, Govt focuses on winter preparedness in Kashmir | Looking Tokyo, Talking London | | Early Times Report
Jammu, July 15: Even as Jammu has been facing severe “power crises” this summer, the government is focusing on “preparedness” to ensure proper power supply in Kashmir during coming winters. While winter is still far away and the people of Jammu are facing hardships due to power crises in the ongoing summers, the government has held a high level meeting to discuss the power supply in Jammu and Kashmir. Official documents reveal that the winter preparedness for Kashmir will start later this month and that it was decided at the high level meeting. On July 7, the Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha while chairing a high-level meeting in Srinagar to review the power scenario in J&K, enquired about the way forward and future deliverables planned by the Power Development Department. Apart from the discussing the overall power scenario in the Union Territory, as per the sources, the power supply for Kashmir remained the main focus not only for the ongoing summers but also for the coming winters. Officials said the meeting resolved to start power preparedness in Kashmir for winters from July 20. As per an official handout, there was no mention of the “power crises” in the winter capital of Jammu, where people continue to suffer in the scorching heat coupled with the Covid-pandemic when supply of electricity was supposed to be life-saving for treatment of patients on oxygen concentrators at home. Jammu has been unable to get respite even after the government lat month ordered enquiry into “power crises”. Recently, after a drizzle parts of the city here remained plunged in darkness for hours on July 2. Just last month on June 16, during a high-level meeting at the Civil Secretariat here, the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha while almost apologizing to the people, had assured that a Committee would be constituted by the Chief Secretary to enquire into the unscheduled power outage in various areas. The capital, however, continues to complain of “power crises.” While the government subsequently ordered a probe into alleged power crises in Jammu, the city continues to reel under darkness “quite often.” In June Shaleen Kabra, Principal Secretary Home Department, was appointed as the Inquiry Officer into the matter. The inquiry is believed to be underway. But as per sources, at the recently held meeting in Srinagar, the progress into inquiry about alleged power crises in Jammu was not discussed. |
