Selling MBBS seats | | | The conglomerate of separatist parties, Hurriyat Conference, is all set to be banned under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) as the sale of MBBS seat has proved to be the last nail in the coffin of the amalgam. Earlier this month Counter Intelligence Kashmir (CIK) wing of the J&K Police arrested six persons, including a separatist, Zafar Akbar Bhat and a woman from north Kashmir's Baramulla in a case registered in July 2020 in connection with the alleged racket of selling Pakistan-based MBBS seats and of other professional courses by Hurriyat leaders and using part of the money generated to fund militancy. The Hurriyat selling MBBS seats was a common practice during the rule of Kashmir centric leaders in J&K. Hurriyat factions led by Geelani and Mirwaiz used to provide recommendation letters to the students to seek admission in the professional colleges in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) and cities like Karachi and Lahore. These recommendation letters were provided against huge amounts. The MBBS seats being sold openly continued under the watchful eyes of the former J&K chief ministers. Besides sending the relatives of ex-militants, the henchmen of Hurriyat leaders, used to take money from the affluent people to send their wards to neighboring country for various courses. Their modus operandi was simple: They used to keep the money with them and certify that the family members of candidates being sent by them to Pakistan were somehow connected with separatist ideology. The biggest qualification for attaining a visa to Pakistan for studies was to prove that one has got separatist leanings. When National Investigation Agency launched a crackdown against terror funding it came to fore that there is a triangular nexus between militants, the Hurriyat and the Pakistan establishment that is patronising the Kashmir students in order to prepare a generation of doctors and technocrats who will have leanings towards Pakistan. The Medical Council of India issued a notification that any medical college in Pakistan occupied Kashmir needs permission/recognition under the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956 and such permission has not been granted to any medical college in PoK. The MCI in its notification had stated that the PoK is under illegal occupation of Pakistan and it’s a part of Jammu and Kashmir the medical institutions across the Line of Control cannot function without the prior permission of the MCI. With the arrest of six people involved in the selling of seats, the chapter of sending young boys and girls from Kashmir to Pakistan to pursue professional courses has ended. The separatist ideology is all set to become a history.
