Prevention Remains Key | | | The deadly second wave of Covid-19 is barely over. The people are yet to recover from the devastating impact of it. Amid this, the prediction by the expert panel formed by the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) of a third wave between September and October is a matter of concern. It is true that there has been a decrease in the number of positive cases and less number of admission of Covid patients in hospitals compared to recent past, particularly during April and May this year. However, the administration or people must never lose sight of the fierce 2nd wave, which devastated lives and livelihood. It may be recalled that 1625 Covid-19 deaths and 114359 cases were reported in the May alone. The situation has started to get better since and continues to be so as the time progresses. At the same time, all aspects need to be worked out in a better manner. The lowering of guard against pathogen by the masses can pose a serious threat and lay the base for predicted third wave. The prevention remains the best bet against the ravaging virus, combating which has become tougher because of the emergence of new strains of the disease. The data from Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) reflects that delta mutant was responsible for 85 percent of covid-19 infections in UT of Jammu and Kashmir recently. The INSACOG collects a percentage of covid-19-positive samples for analysis from all States and of the nearly 50,000 samples analysed for their genetic composition, about two thirds were among the internationally classified Variant of Concern or Variant of Interest (VoC/VoI). As per experts, the variant has a high transmissibility and has become the major circulating strain in the past four months. The importance of keeping up the guard is all the more important because the prediction of 3rd wave comes at a time when the recovery rate from Covid has increased manifold. The government should also prepare and keep things ready to meet any exigency, especially providing hospitals with the necessary equipment. The requirements of frontline workers, if any, should be met to meet any health emergency. The pandemic has taken heavy toll in terms of lives and livelihood across the world. The government and people must show that lessons have been learnt. If the pandemic is allowed to do more damage, it will be a matter of immense regret, more so for the government because it is tasked to protect lives and livelihood. |
