Early Times Report

Anantnag, Aug 29: The School Education Department Kashmir has finally taken over a private school in Bijbehara after the management of the school turned bankrupt and financial irregularities of serious nature surfaced.
Director School Education Department Tassaduq Hussain (KAS) had received complaints against the school management that they have failed to run the school academically and financially as per the laid down norms.
The school management, as per the contents of the complaint, had falsely claimed that the school was affiliated with GEMS Education- a leading international education company having campuses across the globe.
This newspaper, back in 2017, published a detailed story ‘Influential businessmen run unregistered school in Bijbehara, dupe parents’ however the authorities didn’t act as school management used their political connections in the erstwhile PDP-BJP government. However, later the school management approached Jammu and Kashmir School Education Department to get the school registered and hence exposed the fact that the school wasn’t affiliated with GEMS Education as previously claimed by them.
Now, after 4 years, the School Education Department, Anti Corruption Bureau and Crime Branch Kashmir have started investigating the matter as complaints of financial irregularities too have surfaced.
In a communiqué, Director School Education Kashmir directed the Chief Education Officer Anantnag to take over the school and operate it both academically and financially.
The Chief Education Officer Anantnag has now been designated as Nodal Officer while as Zonal Education Officer Bijbehara is acting as Principal of the school having assets worth Crores.
The Director School Education Kashmir has also constituted a committee headed by Joint Director South and asked the committee to submit a report within fifteen days. The committee has been asked to ascertain whether the school is affiliated with GEMS Foundation and to find out the legal proprietor of the school.
In a separate order, Chief Education Officer Kulgam has written to bank authorities ‘not to entertain the affairs of instant school until vetted by the undersigned’.
Important to recall, Trio (Businessmen) under the brand name of Everonn set up a school at Bijbehara and later renamed the school as GEMS so ‘GEMS’ being a multinational organization with schools in almost 14 countries attracted parents of every hue from the South. Besides, the branding and advertising strategy of GEMS promising skies was a strong pull.
Parents say that school owners and administration promised an IB diploma or a 10/12 through CBSE and the pedagogy was based on ‘no book no homework ‘catchphrase besides promised inter school exchange of students in GEMS owned schools but later that never happened.
The school was reportedly charging Rs 54000 to 84000 fee from a nursery kid but now it has put the career of hundreds of students at stake.
