Two arrested with narcotics, cash in Reasi

JAMMU, Sept 15: Police on Wednesday arrested two smugglers with carrying narcotics and cash in two separate incidents in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir. Senior Superintendent of Police, Reasi, Shailender Singh said that during a surprise checking police seized contraband of heroin, poppy straw, illicit liquor and money earned from the sale of illegal drugs trade and arrested two drug peddlers. He said that Police team at Check Post Balini noticed a person moving around suspiciously who was coming from Reasi towards Katra. On seeing the police he tried to flee. The police chased him and managed to apprehend him. Sensing that he was involved in drug peddling an Executive Magistrate was called on the spot. When the man was frisked in the presence of Executive Magistrate 43.5 gms of heroin having a market value of more than Rs 2.5 lakhs was found in his possession. Drugs money worth Rs 43,500 acquired for the illegal sale of narcotics was also recovered from the possession of man identified as Pawan Singh alias Pammi of Sherwud, Katra. A case under relevant sections was registered and investigations started. The SSP said that Pawan Singh is a notorious drug peddler and had been arrested earlier as well by the team of Police Station Katra with 40.5 gms of heroin. In another incident, police during a surprise check at IRP Chowk Reasi intercepted a tempo driven by one Taj Mohd of Pouni coming from Reasi. During checking, poppy straws and illicit liquor was recovered from the possession of the driver. War against drugs continues in Reasi under the banner "EK YUDH NASHE KE VIRUDH" an initiative of the SSP against drug abuse is now stretching to every nook and corner of the jurisdiction. Under the drive, he said that Reasi Police have registered 119 cases of drug abuse and illicit liquor against 154 offenders since March.
