Srinagar, Oct 1: A Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant was on Friday killed in an encounter which ensued after security forces launched a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in south Kashmir district of Shopian. A police spokesperson said that following specific information about presence of militants, a joint CASO was launched by troops of 34 Rashtriya Rifles (RR), 178 battalion of CRPF and Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir in village Rakhama, Shopian, at around 0500 hrs on Friday. “After sealing all the exit points, when security forces were moving towards a particular area in the village, militants hiding there, opened fire,” he said. He said the security forces retaliated ensuing in an encounter. “One militant was killed in the exchange of fire,” he said, adding the slain has been identified as Mujeeb Lone. As per police records, Lone had joined the militant folds recently and was linked with LeT. “The slain militant was responsible for creating terror among the locals and had been coercing innocent citizens to sympathise with anti-national elements,” he said. The spokesperson said that incriminating materials, arms and ammunition -- including a pistol, a magazine -- were recovered from the site of encounter. “All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation and to probe their complicity in other terror crimes,” he said. “People are requested to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosive materials, if any,” he added. |
