After 75 years, Revenue Deptt serves eviction notices to Rakhi-Brah residents | | | Saahil Suhail Early Times Report
Anantnag, Oct 6: In a surprising move, the Revenue Department in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district has directed residents of Rakhi-Brah to demolish the structures constructed on land belonging to the Rakh and Farm department within 15 days. A copy of eviction notice served to residents asks them to restore the farm land in its original form. “All violators are directed to demolish the structures to restore the land to its original position,” reads the eviction signed by Naib-Tehsildar Chitergul and other officials. The officials in the same eviction notice state that the department of Rakh and Farms have written a letter to Deputy Commissioner Anantnag vide No. DRE/ESTT/OOP/21-22/175-176 dated 30-07-2021 and subsequently Deputy Commissioner Anantnag vide Letter No. DCA/SQ/21/1855-57 directed them to take steps in this regard. The eviction notices have left the residents shell-shocked and are now seeking the intervention of LG Manoj Sinha. Locals residents told Early Times that the Rakh and Farms land, situated at village Rakhi Brah , Ranipora, Brah, Kawarigram and Kullchochar of Tehsil Shangus, is in the procession of farmers since 1950 and the department Rakh and Farms used to take ¼ share of crop from them till 1983. “In 1983, a cabinet meeting was held in Qazigund Kashmir and the practice of sharing 1/4th share of total crop production was abolished,” BDC Chairman Choudary Abdul Hameed told Early Times. He said that the residents have constructed houses, cowsheds and other structures on the farm land with the permission of the Rakh and Farms department. “This land belongs to the farmers who have been cultivating it since 1957 and this is evident from the fact that the residents were never served any notice till this time,” he added. Local Sarpanch Mohammad Yaqoob threatened massive agitation if the administration didn’t withdraw the notice served to residents. “500 kanals of land has already been allotted to Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK) refugees vide order No. Reh. 23/59/1959 dated 12-08-1959,” he said. Locals said that they were residents of India for decades and deserved final ownership of the land. “We are Indians and we aren’t refugees. If land can be allotted to refugees why not us,” they said. Assistant Commissioner Anantnag, Syed Yasir told Early Times that they will not take action against the residents till they will examine the matter thoroughly at Deputy Commissioner Level. |
