India’s Internet User Base Grows with 3.012 Crore | | | The nation’s internet penetration rises, mostly with Android-dominated mobile data subscriptions. State specific data reveals certain peculiarities. Q1 2021 Marks an Internet Subscription Increase of 3.79 Per Cent The first trimester of the year saw a quarterly rise in Indian internet penetration of 3.79 per cent as 3.012 crore new subscribers joined the ranks of desi internet users. At the end of December 2020, India had 79.518 crore active internet users, and by the end of March 2021 this number grew to 82.530 crore. Detailed data from the recently released Telecom Services Performance Indicators Report by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) for the quarter of January to March 2021 reveals a decline in narrowband subscribers. Users with access to the Internet with a capacity lower than 512 Kbit per second in one or both directions went down with 1.18 per cent from 4.777 crore at the end of December 2020, to 4.721 crore at the end of March 2021. Broadband Internet subscribers (access speeds equal or higher than 512 Kbit per second) marked a quarterly increase of 4.11 per cent, from 74.741 crore in Q4 2020 to 77.809 crore towards the end of Q1 2021. Wired users at the end of the period were just 3.15 per cent or 2.6 crore. Out of the 79.931 crore wireless subscribers comprising 96.85 per cent of the total Bharat internet user base, 6.6 lakh or 0.08 per cent overall used fixed wireless services, and 79.865 crore or 96.77 per cent used mobile internet. Android Phones Dominate the Indian Mobile Market Proprietary data generated by approximately 78 thousand users between January and April 2021 shared by SevenJackpots' casino market researchers reveals that the top 6 performing Android phone brands in India account for a combined share of 89 per cent of all brands used in the country. The leader is Xiaomi with a market share of 23.38 per cent and South Korean Samsung is the runner-up with 19.24 per cent. They are followed by Vivo at 15.25 per cent, while Oppo and Realme are fourth and fifth with market presence of 10.68 per cent and 8.87 per cent respectively. According to more detailed data published by ENV Media, the premium smartphone segment is shared between rivaling OnePlus (3.95 per cent) and Apple (5.44 per cent). The analysts at 7Jackpots attribute the growth and development of the market largely to the effects of the “Make in India” Initiative and the incentives provided by the Government. Four of the top five market leaders Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, Realme, together with OnePlus, have production facilities within the industrial complex at Noida (New Okhla Industrial Development Authority), Uttar Pradesh, just outside Delhi. The states of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh also accommodate factories for local production of Chinese smartphone brands. States’ Economic Status Linked to People’s Market Behavior Another recently published research article by SevenJackpots focuses on the “Biggest Online Gambling States in India”. The paper is based on proprietary Google Analytics data for the period between April 1 and September 15, 2020, and reveals that almost two thirds of all desi online casino customers come from the 6 leading Indian metros and their states. Maharashtra (population estimated at 12.31 crore in 2019) with its capital Mumbai which hosts more than 2 crores of people provides 17.4 per cent or more than 1 of every 6 online gamblers in India, gambling on websites like Purewin.com The state of Telangana (population 3.93 crore) including the Hyderabad urban agglomeration accounts for almost 10 per cent of Indian online casino traffic. West Bengal (9.96 crore people) together with the Kolkata agglomeration and Karnataka (6.75 crore) with Bangalore follow in third and fourth positions respectively with almost identical shares of around 9.3 per cent each. Tamil Nadu (7.78 crore) with its capital city of Chennai are sixth with 8.1 per cent. The most populated state Uttar Pradesh with its estimated 23.78 crore inhabitants scores 8.2 per cent in fifth place, just a notch higher than Delhi’s 8.1 per cent on seventh position generated by a population of just 1.87 crore. The analysts at SevenJackpots attribute those discrepancies between size of population and number of online casino users to a combination of socio-economic factors including the states’ Human Development Indexes (HDI), GDP per capita and the percentage of the population that lives below the line of poverty.
