Early Times Report JAMMU, Nov 2: Thousands of households this Diwali will be lit with the 'Roshni' candles, manufactured by the inmates of District Jail Ambphalla here. Just like every year, this year too demand for Roshni candles is high, especially ahead of the Festival of Lights, Deepavali, to be celebrated on November 4. "The inmates are skilled in various works, especially the handmade items, with the help of small-scale machinery," an official said. He said besides candle making, they are also being trained in skills like handloom, handicrafts, stitching, embroidery, music, art & craft and painting. The women inmates are contributing to stitching, embroidery and art and craft activities, he said, adding at present candles are in high demand. "People visit our outlet outside the jail premises to purchase these items," he said adding that the candles are also being exported to various parts of the Union Territory. "The candles made with love and affection by the inmates will lit many households on Diwali," he said. "We always purchase candles from this outlet. The colorful candles are durable, cheap and best," said Angad Verma, a local. He appealed to the people to purchase candles from the outlet because it will also be a huge contribution towards the savings of inmates. "At the time of release from jail, the savings are handed over to them so that they can utilize the amount in routine life thereafter," said an officer. |
