No Token Tax | | | The High Court has come for the rescue of people who are plying vehicles purchased from other states in Jammu and Kashmir. The High Court has directed the J&K government not to demand 9% token tax from the owners of vehicles who have already paid it at the time of registration. The Division Bench of J&K High Court took a serious note on demand of 9 percent token tax from the owners of vehicles who have already paid at the time registration outside the Jammu & Kashmir directed the UT administration to adhere to the judgment in letter and spirit, and there shall be no demand made of 9 percent token tax from the owners of the vehicles who have already paid the tax at the time of registration outside the UT. A few months ago the Transport Department had issued a circular that the people who have purchased their vehicles from outside Jammu and Kashmir need to pay 9% token tax for plying their vehicle in J&K, but the order was challenged in the court by a writ of certiorari. The court upheld the petition and directed the J&K administration to comply with the Central Motor Vehicles undertaken for assignment of new registration marks of the vehicles. The High Court’s order has ended the uncertainty that had crept into the minds of people who had purchased the vehicles from outside J&K. After the circular was issued there were rumours that no vehicle with outside registration number will be allowed to ply on J&K roads. It led to many vehicle owners selling their moveable assets for peanuts. Now, the air has been cleared and people have heaved a sigh of relief. After J&K’s transition into a union territory many orders and circulars were issued. The ones which could have been challenged were opposed but the ones that couldn’t be were implemented. People have been demanding that before taking any decision the government should take them on board as the circulars that are issued hit a common man directly. Rules have been made stringent but the quality of life and the facilities that need to be provided to a common man are not coming upto the mark. The administration needs to pay attention towards making the life of a common man easier rather than making it difficult. |
